Netflix’s new thriller The Last House was released directly on OTT on 7th August 2026. The trailer looked very promising. It made it look like a really intense thriller, like the next super thriller from Netflix. But did it actually live up to that promise or not?
The Last House Story (spoiler-free)
One day, suddenly, everyone’s doors are locked. No matter how much they try, they can’t open them. The story is about how they escape from being trapped inside their houses. Why the doors are locked and what’s causing it is kept as the main suspense throughout the film.
I’ve thought this many times while watching Hollywood movies. Why is it that you guys never lock the doors? But in this movie, the whole story is about not being able to open the doors.
The best thing about this movie is Greta Lee and Wagner Moura. Greta Lee has done great, phenomenal work in Past Lives, and Wagner Moura was in Narcos, one of Netflix’s best series. They are the best part of this movie.

The First 30 Minutes: The Best Part
But in the first 30 minutes, the movie becomes really suspenseful. What’s happening? Why are these doors locked? Is it aliens, is it rain, or is the government doing something like this? They keep you in this kind of confused state throughout the first 30 minutes.
The COVID Lockdown Feeling
The whole setup kind of reminds you of COVID. Everyone is stuck inside their own houses, and they can only talk to their neighbours or family through the windows.
That whole feeling of being locked inside, not knowing what’s happening outside, and slowly adapting to this new normal is there throughout the movie.
It gives you that COVID lockdown feeling, but they take it into a thriller and survival kind of situation.
The Family & Small Details
After 3 days of doors shut, the kids refuse to eat vegetables. They say they don’t like them and would rather eat cereal. The father quietly takes the vegetables and says, “Fine, if you don’t want them, I’ll eat them,” and finishes them himself.
But three months later, everything has changed. The kids are eating vegetables stavingly and even ask for more because what they have isn’t enough. This time, the father gives them the vegetables from his own plate.
This shows how the situation have changed.
The Patience With The Mystery
Little by little, nature starts taking over. As humans slowly disappear, wild animals and plants start taking over.
They show a toy deer as a Christmas decoration, and it slowly goes out of focus, while a real deer comes into the frame. These kinds of small, subtle things showing how the world is changing are done really well.
For the first hour, they don’t reveal the actual reason for what’s happening. For that bold choice, you definitely have to appreciate them. Because keeping the story gripping for one whole hour without revealing anything is a big thing. Kudos to the team for that.
What Doesn’t Work
The Writing Becomes Inconsistent
There are a few inconsistencies in the writing. The kids’ behaviour doesn’t always make sense. One moment, they seem happy and are adapting to this situation, and the next moment, they suddenly start behaving like teenagers. Some of the character decisions also don’t feel consistent.
Supporting Performances
Apart from Greta Lee and Wagner Moura, the acting feels a little weak. The other performances don’t have the same impact, and because of that, the movie doesn’t really feel like a big Hollywood production. It doesn’t feel like a big A-list Hollywood movie. The overall production value feels a little weak

The revelation at the end was actually not bad. But, yeah, it could have been better. Definitely, it didn’t meet the expectation that the trailer had created. But definitely, it’s not a bad film to watch. You can definitely watch it on a weekend with your family, with popcorn. If you’re into the thriller genre, definitely give it a watch.
