There are teasers that explain everything, and then there are teasers like Dorothy. In just a few moments, Karthik Subbaraj doesn’t tell us what the film is about. Instead, he creates a feeling. A feeling of mystery, curiosity, and quiet confidence. After watching it, it feels like the director is going back to what he does best: letting the story speak louder than the spectacle.

Dorothy marks Karthik Subbaraj’s 10th directorial and stars Keerthy Suresh in the lead. The title teaser was unveiled by Dhanush on social media, offering a mysterious first look at the film without revealing its story.
The film also marks Karthik Subbaraj’s first collaboration with legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja, making it the maestro’s 1,540th film as a music director.
Produced by Academy Award-winning Sikhya Entertainment, in partnership with Jio Studios and Dhammam Films, Dorothy is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before its worldwide theatrical release on 25 September 2026.
A Teaser That Excites More Than It Explains
The teaser opens with smoke slowly filling the frame before giving us random glimpses of the world of Dorothy. That alone sets the vibe. Then come random glimpses of people, places, and moments without giving you any context. Somehow, the entire teaser has an international feel to it. As intellectual movie critics would say, it has a “global, yet rooted” kind of vibe.
Even a simple close-up shot of a parotta with salna slowly dripping over it—that’s it. But somehow, it makes you go, “Thalaivan Karthik Subbaraj is definitely cooking something here.”
What’s even more interesting is that the film is titled Dorothy, yet the character Dorothy, played by Keerthy Suresh, appears for barely two or three seconds in the entire teaser. That alone tells you Karthik Subbaraj isn’t interested in revealing his hand just yet.
By the end of it, you don’t know what the story is. You don’t know who the characters are or what’s happening. All you know is, “Okay… there’s definitely something here.” And honestly, that’s exactly how a teaser should make you feel.
It Feels Like Karthik Subbaraj Is Going Back to His Roots
The Director Who Changed the Game
There was a time when Karthik Subbaraj genuinely felt like the next big thing in Tamil cinema. After Pizza, it was obvious that a fresh filmmaker had arrived. Then came Jigarthanda, a film unlike anything we had seen before. The story, the screenplay, and especially that climax completely blew us away. It was mass, unpredictable, and yet incredibly entertaining.
Then he made Iraivi, and instead of repeating himself, he went in a completely different direction. That’s what made Karthik Subbaraj special. For me, Iraivi was one of the first Tamil films that truly had an international flavour. The filmmaking, the cinematography, the overall quality—everything felt world-class. It made me think, “Yes, this is the kind of cinema I want to see more of from Tamil filmmakers.”
When Bigger Started Replacing Better
Then came Petta. It was a proper Rajinikanth fan sambavam, and there’s no denying that it worked commercially. But if you ask me, it didn’t quite have the Karthik Subbaraj flavour that his earlier films did.
The same feeling continued with Jagame Thandhiram, Jigarthanda DoubleX, and more recently, Retro. I know Jigarthanda DoubleX received critical acclaim, won awards, and is loved by many. But personally, I never felt it represented Karthik Subbaraj at his absolute best. It almost felt like the films were becoming bigger in every way—bigger stars, bigger themes, bigger ambitions—but somewhere along the way, they lost the simplicity and sharp storytelling that made his early work so memorable.
Why Dorothy Feels Different
That’s why Dorothy excites me. After Retro, this feels like Karthik Subbaraj is finally returning to his roots. A smaller, more intimate film. Something in the space of Iraivi. A film that feels like it’s made for the story first, not the scale.
Interestingly, Karthik Subbaraj himself has said that Dorothy is a story that’s very close to his heart. He also revealed that he’s been holding on to this story for quite some time, but believes every story decides its own time to be told. Looking at the teaser, it genuinely feels like that time has finally arrived. And honestly, that’s the Karthik Subbaraj I’ve been waiting to see again.
Final Thoughts
I could be completely wrong. Dorothy might end up being something entirely different from what I’m expecting. But that’s exactly what excites me.
For the first time in a long time, a Karthik Subbaraj teaser hasn’t tried to sell me a hero, a twist, or a grand spectacle. It has simply made me curious. That’s the feeling I had after watching Pizza, Jigarthanda, and Iraivi. Not because I knew what the film was about, but because I trusted the filmmaker behind it.
Maybe I’m reading too much into a two-minute teaser. Maybe that close-up shot of a parotta with salna really is just a close-up shot. But if a teaser can make me feel that “Thalaivan Karthik Subbaraj is definitely cooking something here,” then it’s already done its job.
Come September 25, we’ll know whether Dorothy lives up to that promise. Until then, this is easily one of the Tamil films I’m looking forward to the most.
